Manifolds, twinsets & stage rigging

Technical diving is built on redundancy. SoprasTek carries the hardware that turns cylinders into a configured, fault-tolerant system — isolation manifolds, complete twin sets, stage and sidemount rigging, and argon for dry-suit inflation.

The principle

One failure should never cost you all your gas

Every technical configuration answers the same question: if a regulator, hose or first stage fails, how do you keep breathing and still have enough gas to ascend? The isolation manifold is the canonical answer.

A manifold joins two cylinders at the top so you breathe from either tank through either regulator — effectively one larger gas supply. In the centre sits an isolation valve. If something fails on one side, you close the isolator and seal off that half, preserving the gas in the unaffected cylinder. Without it, a single failure can drain both cylinders at once.

ISOL vs. screw ISOL manifolds carry the integrated central isolation valve — the standard technical configuration. Screw SA / LI formats describe how the valve body attaches to the bridge. Whichever you choose, the manifold length must match your cylinder diameter (171 or 203 mm) and its pressure rating (232 or 300 bar) must match the cylinders — an over- or under-rated manifold won’t seal correctly.

Assembly

Building a backmount double

A configured double set comes down to five matched parts. Buy them assembled as a twin set, or build from components.

Tank 12l diam.171mm 200bar, 232 or 300bar01

Two cylinders

Matched steel cylinders as back gas — consistent negative buoyancy and high capacity. Steel is supplied through Sopras Tanks.

Manifold 171-203mm/232bar-ISOL02

A manifold

Sized to the cylinder diameter and pressure, with the central isolation valve.

Stainless steel twin tank band03

Two tank bands

Stainless steel bands clamp the cylinders at the correct spacing.

Double tank boot04

Bolts & boots

Twin tank bolts set the spacing; boots and EPDM protectors finish the set.

Left vs. right In a double set the left cylinder takes a left-hand valve and the right takes a right-hand valve — this fixes which way each knob turns and is what makes the standardised valve drill work. The SoprasTek valve listings include a left/right reference diagram.

Slung cylinders & suit gas

Stage, sidemount & argon

Everything that rides alongside the diver — decompression and bailout bottles, sidemount cylinders, and the dedicated argon supply for dry-suit insulation.

Stage bottle riggin. 130-160mmTwo-point rigging

Stage & deco bottles

A bolt snap at the neck and a bungee at the base keep the bottle streamlined and stop it swinging. Rigging is sized to the cylinder — 130–160 mm, with dedicated sets for 7 L/S40, 10–12 L long steel and S80.

SM bottle riggingSidemount

SM rigging & holders

Sidemount-specific bottle rigging plus neoprene hose holders for clean SM hose management.

Argon tanks setDry-suit inflation

Argon systems

Argon insulates better than air and keeps suit gas off the back-gas supply. 1 L and 3 L holders, plus the argon valve in M18×1.5 and G 5/8″.

Steel or aluminium for back gas?

For backmount doubles as primary back gas, steel is the standard — higher capacity, higher working pressures up to 300 bar, and a buoyancy that stays negative throughout the dive rather than flipping. Aluminium earns its place as stage, deco and bailout, where the lighter weight reduces sling fatigue and the positive swing is planned for. Many technical divers run both in one configuration.

Steel — back gas

  • Negative buoyancy the whole dive
  • Higher capacity, up to 300 bar
  • Less lead needed
  • Supplied via Sopras Tanks (soprassub.com)

Aluminium — stage / deco

  • Lighter to sling, easy to travel with
  • Corrosion-resistant, non-magnetic
  • Swings slightly positive when empty
  • S80 / S63 standard sizes
